Springs Wild Edible Flora: Magnolia
It’s one of the first trees to bloom in spring time. Whilst we are patiently waiting for the season to change, I want to share ways to use this beautiful, fragrant flower. I’ll keep it short:
Fresh Petal Tea
One of the first things that come to mind and the easiest, is to infuse the flower to make a classic herbal tisane. Magnolia flowers are known for their anti-microbial properties and fighting infection as well as having mild sedatory effect.
Vinegar
Seep for around three weeks or as long as you can wait. The longer, the better the flavour. Vinegar itself is just SO easy to make and contains only four elements - apples, sugar, water and time. Find a recipe here.
Herbal Maceration
If you make skincare, haircare or any solid products, you’ll know about oil infusions. These are a great way to get beneficial compounds to impart in to your chosen plant oil. Solar infusions are the best, I find, they are the most natural and sustained way of gently heating and releasing.
Dried Herbal Matter
Generally having herbal matter around the house or domestic environment is uplifting and refreshing. Magnolia leaves so much fragrance in the air and looks wonderful, drying nicely.
Water/Bath Ritual
Why not take a moment during your evening routine to fill a hot bath with plenty of flowers. The skin is the largest organ of the body and often gets neglected. It’s amazing how much the skin can absorb during the day, like pollution. Take time to rejuvenate your skin with some real self care rituals.
